Perfecting your Biosketch: A SciENcv Workshop

Are you preparing to apply for a fellowship or your first R01? Are you maybe procrastinating on your writing your Personal Statement? Have you heard about the changes to the NIH Biosketch format?

Join us at 12:30pm on November 10, 2021 for our hourlong "Perfecting your Biosketch" workshop to learn about the basics of creating a Biosketch (including the Personal Statement), the use of the NCBI tools My Bibliography and SciENcv, and the formatting changes that have recently gone into effect.

Library Skylight Replacement Project: Lighting

NNLM Establishes the National Center for Data Services (NCDS)

Region 7 of the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) hosted at the UMass Chan Medical School is the recipient of an award (3UG4LM012347-06) to serve as the NNLM National Center for Data Services (NCDS) 2021-2026. UMass Chan has entered into a partnership with the NYU Grossman School of Medicine Health Sciences Library (NYUHSL) to lead the NCDS. Alisa Surkis, PhD, MLS will serve as the Director for the NCDS. Dr. Surkis is the Deputy Director and Vice-Chair for Research of the NYUHSL.

Yup, there’s a librarian for that, too. 

Join us on Wednesday October 13 at 12:00pm for a 30 minute overview to learn about all the research resources and services the Lamar Soutter Library provides.  

New Library hours effective September 20, 2021

Effective September 20, 2021, the Library will be open Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. The Library will remain closed Saturday and Sunday. Library doors will close 15 minutes prior to closing time.

Eligible UMMS/UMMHC badge access only to enter the library (24/7). At this time the library is not open to members of the public. If your badge is not working after hours, please contact the Campus Police at 508-856-3296.

Constitution Day event and Library book display

The Office of Student Life (OSL) will be hosting a Constitution Day event on 9/16/21 from 1PM to 2PM in the Sherman Center MPR – West room. They will be serving apple pie, asking Constitution trivia questions, and giving out pocket Constitution books. Brush up on your knowledge of the Constitution by going to the National Archives. Stop by for some pie and test your Constitution knowledge!

New Home for Research & Scholarly Communication Services

Along with the many other exciting renovations that took place in the Library during 2020-21 (and continue now with the skylight replacement project), the Research & Scholarly Communications Department moved to a new office space. The completely refurbished suite provides individual offices for each librarian in the Department, a workspace for our library assistant, and a shared conference/teaching area that we hope to put to good use as students and staff return to campus.

New online resource available

The Library is pleased to announce the addition of the LGBTQ+ Source database to our offerings available through EBSCO. The LGBTQ+ Source is primarily a social science database which includes ample coverage of resources related to LGBTQ+ issues, including social determinants of health. The database also includes several journals, magazines and monographs focused on public health, sexual health and mental health through the LGBTQ+ lens.

The Network of the National Library of Medicine welcomes Bennie Finch to our staff as an Education and Outreach Coordinator. Bennie completed a MLIS at Southern Connecticut State University in May and also holds a MSW. She joins librarianship after working as a social worker with children, families, and early childhood education for a number of years.

Welcome Sean Corning!

The Network of the National Library of Medicine is thrilled to welcome Sean Corning to our team as an Education and Outreach Coordinator. This position combines Sean’s instructional, academic research, and medicinal chemistry interests with librarianship.

Sean recently completed his MS in Library and Information Sciences in May and has a MA in Chemistry. Sean is active in the American Library Association.

Skylight Replacement Project (June-August 2021)

Starting July 2021, the three skylights situated above the main seating section of the Library (curved couch, large tables, and outside the computer classroom) will be replaced. Scaffolding and safety barriers will be installed in July, and work is expected to continue into mid-August. All three skylights will be removed and reinstalled with a new energy efficient skylight system.

The HiM Committee of Lamar Soutter Library and Dr. Richard Berlin invite you to the award ceremony and readings of poetry and creative writings by fellow UMMS medical, nursing, doctoral students, residents, and Fellows. The Gerald F. Berlin Creative Writing Award is funded by a donation from Richard M. Berlin, MD, a poet, and Instructor in Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
