We’re excited to announce that the Lamar Soutter Library, UMass Chan Medical School, has signed on to a Read and Publish Agreement with Cambridge University Press (CUP). This agreement was made possible thanks to the NorthEast Research Libraries Consortium (NERL), of which we are a member.

What does this mean? The agreement waives article processing charges (APCs) for open access articles that meet the following criteria:

  • Have a corresponding author affiliated with UMass Chan Medical School.
  • Be original research that falls under a type of eligible article. These include research articles, review articles, rapid communications, brief reports, and case reports.
  • Be accepted for publication by an CUP journal covered by the agreement.
  • Be accepted for publication on or after January 1, 2023.

Open access (OA) articles are available to anyone to access and read, regardless of subscription. OA is an important part of disseminating science quickly and equitably to the world. APCs can be a barrier to those who want to support open science, but do not have the funds to make their research freely available via reputable publishers. Read and publish agreements are a new trend in scholarly communications and publishing, and we in the Library look forward to seeing the positive impact this particular agreement will have on our research community.

A full list of eligible journal titles is available on CUP’s website, but the following is a selection that we know UMass Chan authors have published in to date:

  • British Journal of Nutrition
  • CNS Spectrums
  • Expert Reviews in Molecular Medicine
  • Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology
  • Journal of Clinical and Translational Science
  • Journal of Laryngology & Otology
  • Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics
  • Palliative & Supportive Care

If you have questions regarding how to take advantage of this agreement, please contact one of the librarians in the Research & Scholarly Communication Services and we’ll be glad to help!
