Region 7 of the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) hosted at the UMass Chan Medical School is the recipient of an award (3UG4LM012347-06) to serve as the NNLM National Center for Data Services (NCDS) 2021-2026. UMass Chan has entered into a partnership with the NYU Grossman School of Medicine Health Sciences Library (NYUHSL) to lead the NCDS. Alisa Surkis, PhD, MLS will serve as the Director for the NCDS. Dr. Surkis is the Deputy Director and Vice-Chair for Research of the NYUHSL. She has led the development of data services at the NYUHSL, and engaged in multiple national efforts to facilitate data services at health sciences libraries. Peace Ossom-Williamson, MLS, MS will be joining NYUHSL as the Associate Director of NCDS. Prior to this role, Ms. Ossom-Williamson was the Director for Research Data Services at the University of Texas at Arlington, and has developed innovative curricula, programming, and resources locally, regionally, and nationally. NYUHSL is recognized as a national leader in data services and we are excited to have them join the NNLM family.

NCDS will integrate the values of open science, reproducibility, inclusivity, and ethical use of data in an innovative educational portfolio. The center will offer courses with coaching to assist in bringing knowledge into practice, provide training in coding followed by codeathons to consolidate knowledge, curate existing resources to build an online Data Roadmap for self-directed learning, make curricular resources discoverable and accessible, and coordinate unconferences to support community building and development of resources. Additionally, the NCDS will create a pipeline for developing new data librarians through a paid internship program, targeting those underrepresented in the profession.

NCDS is interested in hearing from you about the types of programs and training you think will be beneficial. Feel free to reach out and be on the lookout for upcoming class and webinar offerings.
