Interlibrary Loan & Pull and Copy
Borrowing through Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) for UMass Chan/UMMHC patrons
If a journal article, book, or other material is unavailable at the Lamar Soutter Library, UMass Chan Medical School faculty, staff, and students and UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC) staff can borrow it from other collections.
How to Place Requests
- Through our online databases you can use the "Check for Full Text" link to order journal articles not owned by the library. Simply click on the “Request this document via Interlibrary Loan” link which will fill-in the interlibrary loan request form.
Or
- You can log into your ILLiad account and fill out an interlibrary loan request form.
- The first time you place an order, you will register as an ILLiad user. Your library barcode number will be your username. You will choose your own password. To avoid delays, be sure to include your payment information.
- If you forget your password, contact the Interlibrary Loan office at 508-856-2080.
Delivery
Patrons can choose the delivery method:
- For articles: email
- For books: pick-up at the Library Service Point or interoffice mail
Fees
- UMass Chan students: Free!
- UMass Chan/UMMHC faculty and staff:
- Article or book loan: $14.00
- Surcharge for rush requests: $14.00
- Payment:
- UMass Chan faculty and staff: A Speed Type number or Account number is necessary for each transaction
- UMMHC staff: Please provide your department name (e.g., Memorial - ObGyn)
- Credit cards are not accepted
- The Library pays all copyright charges
Returns
Return books and other materials by the due date to the Circulation Desk. You are financially responsible for damage to, or loss of materials, from the time they are picked up until the time they are returned to the library.
Borrowing through Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) for Boston Medical Library (BML) patrons
- Free articles, books, or book chapters
- Create an account in ILLiad as a first-time user:
- Go to ILLiad and select First Time User
- Library Barcode Number = LastNameFirstInitial (i.e. DoeJ)
- Fill out the rest of the form, making sure all required fields are filled
- Status = Boston Medical Library (BML)
- Department = Boston Medical Library (BML)
- Username = LastNameFirstInitial (i.e., DoeJ)
- Choose a password
- Click Submit Information
- Add Account
- Account Number: Boston Medical Library
- Leave all other fields blank
- Click Add Account
- Now you are ready to request ILL articles, books, or book chapters!
- To place a request:
- Log into ILLiad
- Under New Request in the left-hand column, choose Article, Book, or Book Chapter
- Fill in as many fields possible (Note: The more information provided, the easier it is for us to fill the request)
- Click Submit Request
- To retrieve a filled request:
- You will receive an email when the request has been filled prompting you to log into ILLiad
- Once you are logged into ILLiad: Under View in the left-hand column, choose view/Download Electronically Received Items
- Download and save file to your preferred location (Note: the file remains available in ILLiad for thirty (30) days, after which it is no longer accessible in ILLiad)
Borrowing through Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) for Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) patrons
- Free articles, books, or book chapters
- To place a request:

Borrowing through Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) for Public Health Digital Library (PHDL) patrons
Free articles or book chapters that are not part of the PHDL can be requested through LSL’s Interlibrary Loan by the following PHDL members:

- CA Dept. of Healthcare Services (DHCS)
- Local Public Health Departments
- Massachusetts Health Policy Commission
- New Mexico Department of Health
- Philadelphia Public Health Department

Instructions for ordering articles:
- Create an account in ILLiad as a first-time user:
- Go to ILLiad and select First Time User
- Library Barcode Number = LastNameFirstInitial (i.e. DoeJ)
- Fill out the rest of the form, making sure all required fields are filled
- Status = Select your public health department
- Department = Select your public health department
- Username = LastNameFirstInitial (i.e., DoeJ)
- Choose a password
- Click Submit Information
- Add Account:
- Account Number: Type your public health department
- Leave all other fields blank
- Click Add Account
- Now you are ready to request ILL articles, books, or book chapters!
- To place a request:
- Starting in the PHDL, search for your article using PubMed or the Citation Matcher. If the article is not in the PHDL, you will go to your department’s document delivery page. Fill out the requested fields in the form and hit send.
- This will bring you to the LSL ILLiad page.
- Log in
- The new request form will be pre-populated with your citation information and your personal information
- Choose electronic delivery
- Status and Department fields: choose your public health department
- Click Submit Request
- To retrieve a filled request:
- You will receive an email when the request has been filled prompting you to log into ILLiad
- Once you are logged into ILLiad: Under View in the left-hand column, choose view/Download Electronically Received Items
- Download and save file to your preferred location (Note: the file remains available in ILLiad for thirty (30) days, after which it is no longer accessible in ILLiad)
Pull and Copy
To request an article in the library’s holdings, please log into your ILLiad account and fill out the article request form. Average turn-around time is 24 hours and delivery is via email.
Fee: $13.00 per article. No exceptions.
Lending
The Lamar Soutter Library shares its articles and books with hospital, academic, and public libraries throughout the United States.
