Open Access Week is just around the corner! From October 23 – 27, the library will be hosting fun and practical events to celebrate! The theme of this year’s Open Access Week is “Open In Order To ________.” Why do you support Open Access?
Open access is the free, unrestricted, online access to scientific and scholarly research. There are two ways to make research openly available: by publishing in open access journals, and by archiving works in open access repositories, such as eScholarship@UMMS.
“We engage and invest in research in order to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery, encourage innovation, enrich education, and stimulate the economy—to improve the public good. Communication of the results of research is an essential component of the research process…. Yet too often, because of cost barriers or use restrictions, research results are not available to the full community of potential users.” (SPARC, Open Access Fact Sheet)
Therefore, at UMMS we are taking steps to open access to research in order to:
- democratize access to research;
- increase the visibility of research;
- solve global problems;
- improve public health!
Check out our schedule of events and drop by! All are welcome!
