UMass Chan IT announces the promotion of the new 6GHz (UMMS6) Service Set Identifier (SSID) for the Extreme Wi-Fi Network in the Library and in the Lazare Research Building (LRB). The new SSID can be accessed by devices that can utilize 6GHz. Some of the benefits include:
- 6GHz (Wi-Fi 6E) provides 1,200MHz of new spectrum (59 new channels). The 5GHz spectrum only has 25 channels, so this is a value-add of more than 200% on system capacity.
- WPA3, 802.11w, and OWE are required in 6GHz, so it is more secure.
- There is far less interference in the 6GHz spectrum, which means better user experiences when using Wi-Fi.
