Research & Scholarly Communications Manager

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Associate Director, the Research and Scholarly Communication Manager leads and supports the Library staff in developing and implementing innovative and effective services that advocate new models of scholarly communication in the sciences. This position is responsible for planning, setting goals, setting priorities, and designing and monitoring workflow of the department. The Research and Scholarly Communication Manager builds partnerships and coordinates activities with the Office of Research. This is one of the leadership positions in the library.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management

  • Supervise the activities of staff in Research and Scholarly Communications including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance management
  • Ensure departmental goals align with library and university strategic initiatives
  • Initiate and coordinate mission strategic initiatives as needed
  • Serve on leadership executive management team in the library.

Research and Scholarly Communication

  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Library's teaching, learning, and research services in support of scholarly activities
  • Develop a successful scholarly communication program, promote the use of emerging technologies, and incorporate best practices into reference and research services
  • Oversee the implementation of library-based research support services, such as supporting the NIH Public Access Policy, promote the role of Open Access in digital scholarship, and integrate library-based services for research data management
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and engage research faculty and students on campus
  • Respond to, anticipate, and assess user needs with regard to research, teaching, scholarship, and new technologies
  • Lead investigations into innovative service models and the development of new programs to meet user needs and support the library’s mission
  • Represent the Library and participate in campus-wide initiatives in support of e-Science
  • Cultivate collaborative initiatives between the Research and Scholarly Communications Department and University’s research departments
  • Collaborate with heads of other library departments to provide integrated support for interdisciplinary teaching and learning, develop programs, and support graduate research, teaching, and learning experiences

Overall

  • Serve as a leader and/or active member of library teams, task forces and committees
  • Represents the library on university committees, task forces, and working groups
  • Participate in and represent the Library in local, regional, and national professional activities
  • Perform other duties as required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science
  • 5 years professional experience including supervisory experience
  • Thorough understanding of the current issues in scholarly communication
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Proven commitment to strong customer service
  • Demonstrated commitment to mentoring, training, and developing staff
  • Excellent interpersonal and managerial skills
  • Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work accurately and quickly
  • Knowledge of major electronic and print health science, clinical, and research resources
  • Demonstrated familiarity and use of information technology tools and products
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate new services and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and to contribute positively to a team environment
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure with multiple priorities in a rapidly changing environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Second degree in health science, education, science, or public health area
  • AHIP membership preferred
  • Grant writing and administration
  • Experience designing, implementing and managing multi-year/multi-institutional complex projects
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred

Library Assistant Per Diem

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Will work under the supervision of the Local Collections Coordinator to staff the Circulation/Reserve Desk, interact with library users to charge and discharge materials according to library policies and procedures and to provide basic informational services in the absence of reference staffing.

The per diem Library Assistant provides service at the Library’s public desk performing such functions as check-out and check-in of library materials and customer registration. The assistant will help library customers locate materials and use library equipment. The assistant may open or close the Library and will perform other related duties such as, maintaining online records in the circulation module, checking shelves for overdue items, sending overdue notices, processing holds and Interlibrary Loan requests. May assist with comparable tasks in other library departments.

This is a per diem position.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Charge books, government documents, reserves, and audio-visual materials to approved borrowers; discharge same. Use online circulation system (CARL).
  • Interview and verify borrow eligibility using a matrix of borrower categories and lists of eligible borrowers. Receive and process applications and annual fees, as indicated
  • Interpret library policies and procedures to library users
  • Authenticate password eligibility for Library Computer Area and for MEDlinesNet, the library’s computer network
  • Interpret holdings and location information for users. Understand and apply knowledge of bibliographic records and series statements for books, journals, and government documents
  • Provide total library security in absence of other library staff. Interface with Campus Security at library closing
  • Answer phones and direct calls to appropriate library departments
  • Assist in monitoring and training shelvers as needed. Sort and shelve materials and shelf read, as necessary
  • Assist with processing and labeling of materials for shelf-readiness
  • Accurately enter detail into library and university systems
  • Perform other duties, as requested

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED required, Associates degree preferred
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction and work cooperatively
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong commitment to innovative and responsive public service
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability for sorting, shelving, and filing of materials
  • Ability to work varied schedules
