Lamar Soutter's UMMS Years
October 1962: Legislation was enacted establishing the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
December 1963: Massachusetts Governor Endicott Peabody named Dr. Soutter Dean of the Medical School project.
February 1964: Dr. Soutter began to select faculty for the new Medical School.
October 23, 1969: Ground was broken for the Medical School.
1970-1971: Dr. Soutter served as President of the Massachusetts Medical Society.
May 25, 1974: The University of Massachusetts Medical School graduated its first class.
May 31, 1975: Dr. Soutter received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
