| 2-5-2008 | The Infamous Study: Rethinking Tuskegee, Syphilis and American Culture By Susan Reverby, Ph.D., Professor of Women's Studies, Wellesley College, and author of the prize-winning book, Ordered to Care: The Dilemma of American Nursing. She now concentrates her research on the notorious Tuskegee Syphilis Study. Professor Reverby helped lobby successfully for President Clinton to offer a formal apology to the survivors and their heirs. She continues to speak widely on the history of gender, ethics, and health care issues. "Building on the Women's Health Initiative at UMMS" – Dr. Judith K. Ockene. The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) is a long-term study that has focused on strategies for preventing heart disease, breast and colorectal cancer, and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Dr. Pinn is Director of the Office of Research on Women's Health at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Ockene is Professor of Medicine and the Barbara Helen Smith Chair in Preventive and Behavioral Medicine, UMMS, and Principal Investigator for the WHI study at UMMS/Fallon Clinic. |
