Worcester City Hospital
Worcester City Hospital, located between Queen and King Streets off Chandler Street in Worcester's Main south neighborhood, was the site of the initial Family Medicine residency program affiliated with UMass Medical School. In 1977, after leading a campaign to force the City of Worcester to provide better funding for WCH, a campaign that included community organizing and the threat of a work stoppage, the hospital refused to hire any Family Medicine residents and the program's home base was shifted over to the recently completed University Hospital. Between 1991 and 1995 WCH gradually shut down all its inpatient programs and closed its doors. By 1995, it had become the remodeled home of the community-based Family Health and Social Service Center, which moved from its previous location on Main Street.
