Virtual Catalog Change
The Boston Library Consortium (BLC) is switching vendors for their Virtual Catalog Service. Your access to the current system will be shut down on July 6, 2009. The new system, WorldCat Local, is scheduled to go live on July 15, 2009. The BLC is made up of 20 institutions; however, not all institutions will be live on July 15. We will post an announcement to our website when WorldCat Local will be available for your use.Thank you for your patience during this transition period. The new system offers additional features to make your searching and ordering easier. Additional information will be available when the system is live.
Note: If you have outstanding items borrowed from the Virtual Catalog, please return them by July 31, 2009.

PsycARTICLES® Now Available on Ovid
Library users now have access to the American Psychological Association's PsycARTICLES® journal collection on the Ovid platform. PsycARTICLES® is a database of full-text articles from 66 journals published by the American Psychological Association, the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe Publishing Group. These journals are incorporated into search results of Ovid's PsycINFO database.(Posted on 6-19-09)
MICROMEDEX® "Point of Care" Training
On Tuesday, June 23, 2009, representatives from Thomson MICROMEDEX will be in the library to conduct training sessions on the new "Point of Care" interface. These 30-minute sessions will be conducted in the library Computer Classroom at 8:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.Registration is encouraged, as seating is limited. Elsevier Backfiles and New Ovid Book Titles
The library is pleased to announce the addition of two backfile collections from Elsevier, including the Cell Press Collection and the Immunology and Microbiology Collection. Acquisition of these collections extends coverage of several of our online journals back to their first year of publication.Also, the library has licensed access to over 30 additional titles from Books@Ovid, which doubles the number of online textbooks from the Ovid platform.

Fee Increases for Some Library Services
In order to cover rising costs, which include increases in copyright charges, the Lamar Soutter Library must raise the fees for several Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Services. These increases will help us to partially recover costs while continuing to provide the services you need.- Interlibrary Borrowing will increase from $11.00 to $12.00 per request.
- Pull and Copy Service will increase from $8.00 to $11.00 for the first 20 pages of an article. Additional pages will be charged at the current rate of $.20 per page.
- Loansome Doc Service will increase from $25.00 to $35.00 per article, with a surcharge of $5.00 for material held at other institutions.

New Class Offered
The library is offering a new class, NIH Public Access Policy: Submitting Manuscripts to PubMed Central, which provides an overview of the Policy and covers the practical steps for compliance including determining copyright of currently published articles, maintaining author rights, and using the NIH Manuscript Submission System. Regional E-Science Symposium for Librarians
On Monday, April 6, 2009, regional science and health science librarians will gather at the Hoagland-Pincus Conference Center to collaborate in an invitation-only symposium to address e-science trends in the scientific research arenas at their institutions. A day-long event, the University of Massachusetts and New England Area Librarian E-Science Symposium is co-sponsored by the Lamar Soutter Library, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine–New England Region and the Boston Library Consortium. The day features a morning address by UMass Medical School (UMMS) Chancellor Michael Collins, MD, a panel discussion with perspectives on e-science from two librarians and a UMMS researcher, a presentation on biotools and e-science resources used by researchers and librarians alike, and a presentation on Clinical & Translational Science research by Dr. John Sullivan of UMMS.The afternoon is an opportunity for librarians to engage in breakout sessions and facilitated group discussion in order to identify next steps for action that will enable library support for their research institutions. The discussion will ultimately be reported as specific recommendations for area librarians to explore in the support of their institutional scientific research.

The Humanities in Medicine Committee of the Lamar Soutter Library,
and The Department of Psychiatry at UMass Medical School
present Poets on Prozac Mental Illness, Treatment and the Creative Process A reading and book signing Richard M. Berlin, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at UMass Medical School, is a psychiatrist in private practice, and a published poet. He writes a monthly poetry column for Psychiatric Times and is author of the award-winning How JFK Killed My Father, a poetry collection about illness and the healing arts. He is the editor of Poets on Prozac. Gwyneth Lewis, DPhil, Wales' first National Poet from 2005-2006 and a nonfiction writer, has published six books of poetry in Welsh and English and two nonfiction books. Her 2002 Sunbathing in the Rain: A Cheerful Book on Depression was shortlisted for the Mind Book of the Year. Her essay "Dark Gifts" opens Poets on Prozac. She is currently a Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard.
