Virtual Catalog Replacement Ready for Prime Time – WorldCat Local (WCL) is here!!

WorldCat Local allows you to search the Lamar Soutter collection, the Boston Library Consortium's collections, and the collections of many other libraries worldwide. Most importantly, WorldCat Local will allow you to order books from the Boston Library Consortium Libraries (BLC) or from Interlibrary Loan (ILL) through one seamless interface.

UMMS/UMMHC faculty, staff, and students who are registered (i.e., who have an active LSL barcode) with the library are eligible to order material through WorldCat Local.

  • Ordering books through BLC is free
  • If the book is not available from the BLC, you can direct your order to ILL (A $12 fee applies.)

Training sessions are being planned for November/December. More information is available on the Interlibrary Loan page.

Changes to Loansome Doc Service

Effective November 1, 2009, the Lamar Soutter Library (LSL) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School will no longer provide Loansome Doc services to corporations. Our decision is based on our increasing number of online journal subscriptions whose licensing agreements prohibit providing articles to for-profit corporations or commercial enterprises.

We will continue to fill requests for health care professionals and public health employees who are not affiliated with a medical library. Health care professionals must either provide services to patients or work for a governmental public health agency. All health care professionals who choose us as their library supplier must register with LSL and provide proof of status, including a copy of certification or license.

For more details about LSL's Loansome Doc Service, please go to the Interlibrary Loan page.

Fee Increases for Some Library Services

In order to cover rising costs, which include increases in copyright charges, the Lamar Soutter Library must raise the fees for several Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Services. These increases will help us to partially recover costs while continuing to provide the services you need.
  • Interlibrary Borrowing will increase from $11.00 to $12.00 per request.
  • Pull and Copy Service will increase from $8.00 to $11.00 for the first 20 pages of an article. Additional pages will be charged at the current rate of $.20 per page.
  • Loansome Doc Service will increase from $25.00 to $35.00 per article, with a surcharge of $5.00 for material held at other institutions.
These price changes will go into effect on July 1, 2009. The library continues to pay all the necessary copyright fees for articles supplied. We remain dedicated to providing you with the materials that you need to continue with your research. If you have any questions about the fee increases, please contact Jane Fama at (508) 856-2099.
