Annual Oration of 1976
Hip, Hip, Hooray
Orator: Verner S. Johnson, M.D.
Synopsis of Oration:
Dr. Johnson, an orthopedist, gives an introductory talk on "what you need to know about hip surgery and were afraid to ask." Beginning with hip anatomy, he describes the two types of hip fractures--intertrochanteric and subcapital--the former having a much better outcome than the latter. From there, he relates the history of hip prostheses in fracture treatment, and emphasizes the still-popular Smith-Petersen nail. He does the same for the evolution of femur-head covers and mentions Smith-Petersen's less-successful models, followed by his and Aufranc's successful models. Dr. Johnson is eager to see the future of hip surgery and the developments in hip prostheses.
