What is UMEDS?
UMEDS is a clinical log system, designed to assist you in collecting statistics about the kinds of patients you see during your
clerkships. UMEDS is available both online as a web-based system or to add to your PDA.
Why UMEDS?
The LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education) is a national agency that accredits UMass to award the degree of MD. As part of this
process, they ask us to provide them with certain data pertaining to how we train our students. One of the many standards we must
demonstrate is that our students see a certain range of patient experiences during their clinical years. UMEDS allows you to easily
collect this information relating to your own experience and keep track of this data on your PDA.
What is the difference between using UMEDS on the web or on a PDA?
The PDA version of UMEDS allows you to collect your experiential data without having to jot down notes with pencil and
paper. If you happen to be at a computer, you can also log into the system via the Internet and log your experiences online. Whenever
you synch your PDA, UMEDS will compare the data on your PDA with the data in your online account and will update both with the latest
information.
How do I begin?
You will receive an e-mail that will have your UMEDS user name and password included. When you log into the system for the first time,
you will be prompted to choose a new password. You can begin using UMEDS immediately online or choose the appropriate link on the left
navigation bar under "Getting Started with UMEDS on Your PDA" and follow the steps to download the software. There are a few important
steps you need to take to make UMEDS work correctly on your PDA. Make certain you follow the instructions in chronological order for a
successful set up. If you ever loose your password or need to have your password reset, visit the UMMS IS Help Desk.
What's the Most Important Thing to Remember?
Always make certain that you enter all of your data and perform one last synch before the end of each clerkship block.
What if I have a MAC?
If you synch at home using a MAC, you will need to purchase a piece of additional software to make UMEDS work. This software is called
The Missing Synch and can be downloaded for $39.95 at http://www.markspace.com. Or, you
can use the PC-based synch station in the Lamar
Soutter Library. Yes, you CAN synch your PDA in multiple locations!
