Lamar Soutter's Medical School and Residency Years
1933: Lamar's father, Dr.
Robert Soutter, died
on February 21 from blood poisoning contracted accidentally while operating on a pediatric patient.
1935: Lamar Soutter carried on the
family tradition by graduating from Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard he was active in several
organizations including the Aesculapian, Lancet, and Serpent Clubs.
1935: Lamar
embarked on another voyage, this time as medical officer and chief scientist on
the schooner
Effie M. Morrissey.
1937:
While serving a
residency in New York City, he assisted in many surgeries
of the injured from the destruction of the zeppelin
Hindenburg.
1940: Soutter joined the
surgical staff at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
1942: He
was instrumental in
establishing the blood bank at MGH and served as its first Director.
