Questions About Pay for Print in the Library

-Effective January 2, 2003-

  1. What will change?
    • This service, formerly operated by library staff at no cost to patrons, is now contracted to Mac-Gray/Copico and will be a pay for print service.
    • Cost will be 10 cents per page.
    • Copy cards will be required to print; coins are not accepted at the print stations.
  2. When and how will I learn to use the new printing system?
    • Free live testing of the pay for printing system will occur between December 9th and December 31st, 2002.
    • On December 9 and 10 Library staff will be stationed at the printers to orient patrons to the new system.
    • Instructional handouts and printing tips will be available for your use. Also, the Library Reference staff will be available to assist you as needed.
  3. Can I use the same copy card that I use for photocopies?
    • Yes, the red Mac-Gray/Copico card can be used for both photocopying and printing.
    • The older gray cards will not work in the print system.
  4. How do I purchase new cards?
    • Anyone who is using cash and does not require a receipt can purchase new cards at the card dispensers located on the Library's 1st floor. The dispenser accepts $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills.
    • UMMS and UMMHC Departments using account numbers, and patrons requiring a receipt for purchases, must order cards directly from the Card Services division of Copico.
    • Specific ordering information is available at http://library.umassmed.edu/copyorder.pdf.
  5. Once I have a card from the dispenser, or one ordered directly from Copico, may I add value to it?
    • Yes, value can be added at the dispensers in the Library using cash, but no receipt will be given.
    • Initially, departments cannot add value to cards through Copico, but a solution to this issue is being investigated and will be communicated to departments when available. Departments will be required to re-order new cards until revaluing capabilities are worked out.
  6. What happens if the printer malfunctions while I'm using it?
    • Inform library staff at the Circulation desk, who will immediately contact a Copico technician. The printer will be repaired as soon as possible.
  7. What if a machine causes me to lose cash or value on my copy card, or my card ceases to function while I am printing?
    • Report the loss to Library Circulation staff.
    • Losses less than $5.00 can be corrected immediately.
    • Losses greater than $5.00 must be submitted to Copico for reimbursement, but a card with $5.00 value will be issued to you immediately. You will be required to sign for this card. Legitimate claims will result in reimbursement from Copico in a timely manner.
  8. Where are the printers?
    • Two printers are located on the 1st floor.
  9. Why these changes?
    • It is no longer economically feasible for the Library to operate this service.
    • Contracting out this service is done on all other UMass campuses. A survey conducted nationwide of other medical libraries found that the trend has been for schools to migrate to a copier and printing management service.
    • Copico, a vendor specializing in library copier and print services since 1978, has provided a technician who will be on site regularly to maintain and service our two public printers-in addition to quickly responding in the event of equipment malfunction.
  10. What if I have more questions?
    • Please call Deanna Lucia, Associate Director of Administrative Services at 508-856-7633 and leave a message or email her at Deanna.Lucia@umassmed.edu.
    • For up-to-date information, see the "What's New" section of the library web site at http://library.umassmed.edu.
