Open Access at UMMS
The University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) Faculty Council, which approved a Resolution on Open Access and Scholarship in 2011, is presently considering an official policy supporting open access.
Open Access Policy (pending)
The UMMS Intellectual Property Policy states that the “prompt and open dissemination of the results of research and creative work among scholars is essential to the University’s mission of education and research” and that a “primary goal of the University is the discovery and free dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of the public.”
In keeping with these tenets, an Open Access Policy would require UMMS faculty to grant to the University a non-exclusive, worldwide license to exercise the copyright in their scholarly articles for non-commercial, scholarly purposes. It would also require faculty to deposit a copy of their accepted manuscripts into eScholarship@UMMS, the University’s institutional repository.
A faculty vote on an Open Access Policy has not yet been taken. These pages have been set up for UMMS faculty in preparation for a final vote on an open access policy by Faculty and Executive Councils.
