Library Launches Virtual Library Web Site
The Lowell General Hospital Health Science Library (Lowell, MA) recently launched its virtual 'Web Library.' The site is the first of its kind for a community hospital library in Massachusetts in that it uses controlled vocabulary and NLM classification in its design structure. NLM classification was chosen for organization of its contents, and MeSH and LC subject headings were added for easy navigation. Additionally, the site is broken into two separate collections, a Consumer Health section and a Professional Health and Business Sources section. Hundreds of web sites that were chosen based on a selection criteria have been included, and more sites are being added regularly. The project was initiated to serve the hospital mission statement, "Patients First in Everything We Do." It was launched in an effort to provide outreach services to the community and better access to good medical information for staff. The site can be accessed at http://lowellgeneral.library.net
