FROM THE MAHSLIN CHAIR

We are close to one of the highlights of my professional year, the MAHSLIN Annual Meeting. So many of us work in isolation or semi-isolation that it's a treat to see my colleagues again. That kernel of personal need is wrapped in a professional enrichment of speakers and talk about issues that affect our jobs and careers. One might be tempted to feel discouraged with our daily diet of dismal news, but seeing us all together, I'm gratified to realize the vitality of our association. You make it vital - I look forward to seeing you on April 29.

FROM THE TREASURER

MAHSLIN, as part of its supportive role, contributed financial support to several library-related organizations or programs throughout the past year. They are:

The Boston Public Library Flood Relief Fund ; The MLA Century Fund ; The NAHSL 1998 Annual Meeting (held in Boston)

COMMITTEE NEWS

ARCHIVES Picture this - Kate Kelly, Archives Chair, reports that she has just about finished sorting through the various boxes that contain MAHSLIN's archived documents. She has noticed, however that nowhere along the way has she found any photographs of events, meetings, members, etc. Since pictures often make for the most interesting of historical records, she would like to pull together as many MAHSLIN-related photos as she can. Thus, anyone who may have snapshots or photos that they would like to donate to the MAHSLIN archives is urged to contact Kate Kelly at the Massachusetts General Hospital Treadwell Library, 617/726-8600 or kelly.kate@mgh.harvard.edu.

EDUCATION Two MLA accredited courses have been sponsored by MAHSLIN this year to date. The first, Reference Manager & Procite: Hands On! Was hosted by Nelinet in Newton. Sixteen people attended the half day session on November 19, 1998. The second program, Building a Consumer Health Information Service, was presented by MAHSLIN's own Mary Linn Bergstrom and Kate Kelly. Hosted by Mary Linn at UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester, on April 8, 1999, a total of twenty-five people attended, coming from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Connecticut. A third program is scheduled this summer on June 16, 1999. Creating Library Service Forms on the Web, a half-day class will be taught by Michael Leach and hosted by Kathy Schilling at Boston University Medical Center. Also, the CE Committee and the MAHSLIN Board reviewed and clarified the guidelines for its educational support programs. The guidelines are posted on the MAHSLIN homepage and interested consortia should contact the CE Chair.

NEW LIBRARIAN AT SAINTS MEMORIAL, LOWELL

Judy Reingold Spahr is now the health sciences librarian at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell. She had been the director of the Elliot Hospital Health Sciences Library in Manchester, N.H. for 20 years, and then became director of Optima Health Libraries when Elliot Hospital and Catholic Medical Centers merged to become Optima Health. After a detour outside of the health sciences librarianship world at Yankee Book Peddler, she is back (and happy to be back) among friends!
