Saundra Ketner, formerly of the Dana Farber Library, has become the librarian at the Joslin Clinic. She replaces Barbara Ambos, who is now at SilverPlatter in Norwood.
Frank Landry has reported that he has voluntarily resigned as Medical Librarian and Coordinator of Medical Education for Heywood Hospital in Gardner to become the Medical Librarian for the HealthAlliance Leominster/Fitchburg campuses.

Over the last few years, the Board of Library Commisioners has been working to establish a network which would link all libraries regardless of type. This network takes its structure from existing public library networks and has as its services those already offered by public libraries, such as reference, interlibrary loan, cataloging and shared databases.
For the network to come into existence, the Board had to request funding through the Legislature. With funding in place to support the network and its services, the Board has begun soliciting membership from libraries. Within the last few weeks, you probably received a membership application. I urge you to join! Your membership is vital to the network envisioned by the Board. A network whose time has finally come.

In less than a year, the Annual Meeting of NAHSL will be be coming to Boston. Headquarters will be the Boston Park Plaza; save the dates September 27-29, 1998! The welcoming event on Sunday evening will be a Trolley Tour of Boston followed by a light buffet [with make-your-own sundaes!] at the Park Plaza. The Monday evening 40th Birthday Party/banquet will be held at the "Top of Hub", Prudential Center. There will be many opportunities for MAHSLIN members to participate in making NAHSL'98 a great success. Further announcements will appear on MAHSLIN-L and at the MAHSLIN Annual Meeting.
Abridged Index Medicus will cease publication following the Volume 28, Number 12 [December 1997] issue. NLM will retain the tag for the AIM journals in its databases until further notice.

A good explanation of benchmarking is in "Benchmark for strategic performance improvement" in Information Outlook 1997; 1(8):22-4.
"Book information and reviews on the web" appears in Information Outlook 1997;1(9):9-10.
The ever-present issues of copyright and intellectual property are addressed by the Medical Library Association on its web site at [http://www.kumc.edu/MLA/intprop.html] and by Laura N. Gasaway in "Is coursepack copying fair use?" [Information Outlook 1997;1(7):36-9.
Health World Online sponsors a site called Cybrarian Service [http://www.healthy.net/cybrarian/], "your own real life medical librarian on the Internet." The charges for the service are quite steep; for example, a "quick reference" question (with a 24-hour turnaround time) costs $10 and a "comprehensive" search retrieving 5-10 citations and abstracts (with 3-5 days turnaround) costs $35. If we "real life" librarians gave similar service, we would definitely be out of jobs!
The effects on access and interlibrary loan by electronic journals package deals (especially those of the Academic Press and Elsevier) are discussed in "University libraries debate the value of package deals on electronic journals" [Chronicle of Higher Education, September 12, 1997, p. A31].
Further papers discussing electronic journals are available online from the "Scholarly Communication and Technology Conference" sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation with the Association of Research Libraries held at Emory University in April 1997 at [http://arl.cni.org/scomm/scat/index.html].
The list Hospital Libraries on the Web appears at [http://www.njc.org/hls/HLS_Hosp_Libr.htm]
The Internet is viewed as another way for librarians to gain value in their organization by Hope A. Bell in "The Internet: a new opportunity for information specialists." [Information Outlook 1997;1(9):33-6].
Librarians should be key players in the development of their organization's Intranet, as noted by Armig Adourian and Kitty Schweyer in "Intranets and the proactive librarian" [ Information Outlook 1997:1(7):19-22].
Lower journal prices? Effective January 1, 1998, the Endocrine Society will lower by 5% the subscription rates for Endocrine Reviews, Endocrinology, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Molecular Endocrinology.
Has LATCH been reincarnated? It seems to be a close relative of ""Just-in-time" clinical information" [Chueh H, Barnett, GO. Academic Medicine 1997;72:512-7].
"Quick! Call the knowledge manager" is the answer to the plea, "Help! I'm drowning in data" in an article that appeared in the Boston Sunday Globe [June 22, 1997, p. D1,5]. Librarian of Congress James Billington put forward a good argument for the need for librarians as information navigators.
Library Journal has a digital version at [http://www.ljdigital.com/].
Terry Ballard rebuts novelist Nicholson Baker's disparaging comments about the value of online library catalogs that appeared in The New Yorker in "Library OPACs were handed a disservice" [Information Today 1997;14(7):50].
Papers from the conference "Scholarly Communication and Technology"are available online at [http://arl.cni.org/scomm/scat/index.html]. Many of the papers discuss electronic publishing.
