RML GRANT OPPORTUNITIES
The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, New England Region has a number of monetary awards that are available on a first-come, first-served basis to network members in New England. It is necessary to apply for these awards, following the guidelines outlined at the NER website (http://nnlm.gov/ner/Funding.html) for each one.
There are six funding opportunities. Included are Exhibits (5 awards), Technology Awareness (2 awards), Internet Connectivity (3 awards), Course Development (2 awards), Sister Library (2 awards) and Research Awards (1 award).
Exhibit Awards give individual libraries, consortia or state organizations the funding to register for an exhibit at a health related conference. Exhibiting materials for the National Library of Medicine’s products and services will be provided, at the request of the exhibiting group. It is acceptable for the library, consortium or state organization to also advertise their library services. Up to $2,000 will be granted for each award. For full information about this award, please see http://nnlm.gov/ner/NEARFQ.HTML.
Technology Awareness Awards Program options include organizing and hosting a conference, developing a series of small workshop(s) or videoconference(s), or organizing and hosting an information fair of exhibitors. Format may vary from site to site, but will in general consist of exhibits by the NER and invited vendors, demonstrations, updates, speakers and workshops. The program should be at least 6 hours long and may be offered in conjunction with another conference or event. All programs should be based on technologies relevant to health professionals and consumers. There is no limit on what technologies can be demonstrated or exhibited, although emphasis is on NLM products and services. Up to $10,000 will be granted for each award. For more information about this award, please see http://nnlm.gov/ner/TAPARFQ.html.
For an Internet Connectivity Project, the NER will implement about 3 Internet Connectivity projects at a maximum of $5,000 each. Funding may be used to purchase equipment as needed (computer, printer, fax, highspeed modem). There are also Internet service provider funds, if the library is not on their hospitals or institution’s network. For more information about this award, please see http://nnlm.gov/ner/NICPACFP.html.
The Course Development Award will fund the development of an electronic method for teaching a new skill to a specified audience. The purpose of this award is to develop a class to improve the knowledge base and skills of the customers of the RML. Program options include developing a web-based class, design a web site or developing a long distance learning program using videoconferencing technologies. All programs should be focused on providing an educational opportunity for librarians, health professionals or consumers of health information. Up to $4,000 may be awarded for this award. For more information, please see http://nnlm.gov/ner/CDARFQ.html.
The purpose of the Sister Library (or, Library Exchange Program) is to support the career and professional development of health sciences and public librarians in the region. Funding may be used to reimburse a trainee for living expenses while at the host site. The host site will be paid a stipend to host the trainee. To be a host site or to visit another library, a proposal should be submitted to the NER office outlining a course of study and timeline. Up to $1,000 per week may be reimbursed, with a maximum of $2,000 for two weeks. Timelines may be flexible and must be agreed on by the trainee and the host library. For more information on this award, please see http://nnlm.gov/ner/NSLOLEARFQ.html.
The Research Award may be used to study a number of rich topics applicable to the NN/LM. Applicants may choose to design a research study focusing on a number of areas including telemedicine, distance learning, web-page evaluation and design, consumer health reference services, electronic publishing, technologies for public health professionals, assessing information needs, etc. Research projects involving librarians and multi-disciplinary teams of health professionals and/or public librarians will receive priority. Up to $2500 is available for this award. For more information about the award, please see http://nnlm.gov/ner/NRARFQ.html.
There are lots of opportunities for funds and projects. We hope that one of these will be of interest to your and your colleagues!

MASSFAX-- A NEW DOCLINE RESOURCE
MAHSLIN is pleased to announce the registration phase of the MAHSLIN-sponsored routine, free, fax delivery project! All that is needed to launch MASSFAX is a minimum of eleven members to register with the RML. As soon as the eleventh member replies, a "Library Group" can be created in DOCLINE (on the Freeshare model). Please read the Guidelines at the end of this message, which were designed to explain how we envision MASSFAX will work.
If, after reading the Guidelines, you are interested in participating in this group, please contact Mark Goldstein, our RML Network Coordinator Mark.Goldstein@umassmed.edu and provide the following information :Your Name: Library & Instituion Name: LIBID:
When the eleventh library has contacted Mark, he will then submit that information to NLM, who will create the Library Group in DOCLINE. Mark will alert participants when this is completed.
NOTE: If you are reluctant to join because you lack a fax machine in your library, the RML has award money available to cover the cost of hardware such as fax machines. This award would not cover the installation of an additional phone line, however. If you would like to apply for such an award, please go to http://nnlm.gov/ner/NICPACFP.html for further information.

LET THE FAXES ROLL!

1. THE GOAL OF THIS INITIATIVE IS TO FACILITATE A DECREASE IN TURN-AROUND TIME FOR INTERLIBRARY LOAN REQUESTS WITHIN MASSACHUSETTS. MASSFAX MEMBERSHIP REQUIRES WILLINGNESS TO PROVIDE ROUTINE FAX DELIVERY OF ILL REQUESTS.
2. PARTICIPANTS PROVIDE FREE RECIPROCAL FAX DELIVERY OF ILL REQUESTS TO OTHER MASSFAX MEMBER LIBRARIES WITHIN THE STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS.

8. BEFORE ADDING A NEW LIBRARY, OR MOVING A MASSFAX LIBRARY TO A LOWER CELL IN ONE?S ROUTING TABLE, THE STANDARD POLICY SHALL BE TO SEEK THE PERMISSION OF THAT LIBRARY.
9. IF, FOR ANY REASON, A BORROWING LIBRARY DOES NOT WANT A SPECIFIC REQUEST FAXED (EXAMPLE: FAXING WOULD DEGRADE QUALITY TO AN UNACCEPTABLE LEVEL), ADD ?NO FAX? TO THE COMMENTS FIELD.
