2005 MAHSLIN Hall of Fame - Judith Messerle, AHIP

Judith graduated from the University of Illinois Library School and began her career as the Librarian for the St. Joseph's School of Nursing. She moved through the ranks at St. Joseph's to become: Director of the Medical Center Library, Director of Information Services, Director of Educational Resources and Community Relations and concluded her career at St. Joseph's as the Director of Administrative Services. In 1985, she became the Library Director for the St. Louis University Medical Center. In 1989, she moved to Boston and took the position as Librarian for the Harvard Medical and Boston Medical Libraries at the Countway Library of Medicine, one of the largest medical libraries in the world, in Boston. She remained at Countway until her retirement in December of 2004.

During Judith's career, she was very involved with the Medical Library Association. She served as the President, of the Hospital Libraries Interest Group, she chaired the Ad Hoc Committee to study the Feasibility of Accreditation for Hospital Libraries, she was a member of the Board of Directors, chaired the MLA/NAL Liaison Committee, chaired the Nominating Committee, was the association President from 1986-87, chaired the Joint AAHSLD, MLA Legislative Task Force and chaired the Ad Hoc committee for Fellows and Honorary Members.

She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including: the Eliot Prize in 1984, she is an Academy of Health Information Professionals, Distinguished Member, became a Fellow in 1999, and was the Janet Doe Lecturer in 2000. She became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1998, was named to Who's Who in American in 2001 and received the Dean's Award for Support and Advancement of Women Staff at the Harvard Medical School in 2001. Judith was the recipient of the Marcia C. Noyes Award from the Medical Library Association in 2005.

She has served the National Library of Medicine on numerous committees, panels and councils.

Judith has had articles published on numerous occasions in the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association, as well as co-edited a book entitled, "Hospital Library Management".

Last, but not least, Judith was the keynote speaker at the MAHSLIN 2005 Annual Meeting. Her presentation, "Up the Down Staircase" was stimulating and thought provoking. Her presentation had audience members thinking about the future of medical libraries and medical librarianship long after they left the meeting. Her presentation has been the catalyst for the development of a MAHSLIN Strategic Planning Task Force.
