Janet Cowen is a leader in our consortium and is active on the local, regional and national level, having served in various capacities in the Maine Health Science Libraries Information Consortium (HSLIC), North Atlantic Health Science Libraries (NAHSL), and the Medical Library Association (MLA).
Janet has always advocated increased resource sharing in Maine, and has made the resources of the Maine Medical Center library more freely available to HSLIC members. She has facilitated complicated negotiations and finances for our organization, enabling us to reach new levels of cooperation.
Janet served as Principal Investigator for HSLIC’s Maine Ariel Project, which made the Ariel document delivery system available to all participating HSLIC libraries through a grant from the National Library of Medicine. Her experience and leadership were key in getting the grant for HSLIC and in seeing the project through to its successful conclusion.
Widely recognized as a leader in the profession, Janet is a founding member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Hospital Librarianship. She has given unselfishly of her time to share her experience and insights with her colleagues here in Maine, always with friendship and humor. She is a mentor and a great role model for all of us, and it is my pleasure to nominate her as an outstanding (and overdue) candidate for the Cairns Award.
