All classes are free-of-charge and are open to UMMS and UMMHC staff, students and faculty. Class Descriptions and Schedule

EndNote: Introduction to the bibliographic software program

Level: Introductory
Duration: 60 minutes
Audience: All UMMS and UMMHC
Abstract: EndNote is a bibliographic management tool that allows users to create and organize a library of citations and abstracts and then import them directly into a Microsoft Word document. This class will demonstrate how to set up a new library, how to import citations from MEDLINE, how to work with the citation style manager and how to add bibliographic references to a Microsoft Word document.
Objectives:
  • Attendees will know how to create an EndNote Library.
  • Attendees will know how to import citations from MEDLINE using either Ovid or PubMed.
  • Attendees will understand how to use EndNote with Microsoft Word in formatting bibliographic references for paper or grant submission.

Excel 2007: Introduction

Level: All
Duration: 60 minutes
Audience: All UMMS and UMMHC
Abstract: This 1-hour class will introduce users to Microsoft Excel 2007 basics.
Objectives:
  • Attendees will learn how to read a spreadsheet.
  • Attendees will be able to launch standard formulas for basic math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, averaging, maximums, minimums, counts).
  • Attendees will learn how to use formatting features for display and report printing.
  • Attendees will learn how to create and manipulate charts.
  • Attendees will learn how to link data between worksheets.
  • Attendees will be able to use certain short cuts such as the fill handle option.

Google: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and how to get the most out of it

Level: Anyone familiar with or interested in Google and search engines in general.
Duration: 30 minutes
Audience: All UMMS and UMMHC
Abstract: This 30-minute class will discuss effective ways to use Google's various tools, and demonstrate some alternatives that offer search options just as simple but more targeted.
Objectives:
  • Attendees will learn ways to use Google more effectively--e.g., Advanced Search, and when Google is most useful.
  • Attendees will look at other Google options such as Google Earth, Maps, etc.
  • Attendees will learn about how Google ranks results and compare it to other search engines.
  • Attendees will look at Google Scholar specifically and discuss its advantages--e.g., when it is most effective--and its limitations.
  • Attendees will learn about other free, simple engines such as Scirus (http://www.scirus.com/) and Windows Live Academic Search (http://academic.live.com/) to perform more targeted searches that find superior results.

NIH Public Access Policy: Submitting Manuscripts to PubMed Central

Level: All
Duration: 90 minutes
Audience: All UMMS and UMMHC NIH-funded authors, grant managers and administrative as
Abstract: The NIH Public Access Policy requires all authors publishing peer-reviewed articles based on research funded by NIH to make their work publicly available within 12 months of publication through PubMed Central. This class provides an overview of the Policy and covers the practical steps for compliance including determining copyright of currently published articles, maintaining author rights, and using the NIH Manuscript Submission System.
Objectives:
  • Attendees will learn how to determine when the NIH Public Access Policy applies
  • Attendees will learn how to locate information on copyright for published articles
  • Attendees will learn about copyright addenda
  • Attendees will learn how to obtain PMCID numbers and what to do if one is unavailable
  • Attendees will learn how to access and use the NIH Manuscript Submission System to upload documents to PubMed Central

Ovid: Introduction to searching Ovid databases including MEDLINE

Level: All
Duration: 45 minutes
Audience: All UMMS and UMMHC
Abstract: Introduction to the Ovid Web Gateway and some of its varied databases such as MEDLINE, PsycINFO and HAPI. Hands-on searching will demonstrate features such as the interface of the databases, usage of subject headings, search strategies, and execution of a sample search.
Objectives:
  • Attendees will know of and be able to access the database.
  • Attendees will know icons and search box locations of the database.
  • Attendees will know how to execute a broad search using subject headings, then how to use limits to refine the search.

PowerPoint 2007: Basics and Beyond

Audience: All UMMS and UMMHC
Abstract: This class will provide attendees with a wide variety of Microsoft PowerPoint presentation skills.
Objectives:
  • Attendees will learn how to create PowerPoint presentations, start to finish.
  • Attendees will be able to format and customize different slide designs and layouts.
  • Attendees will learn how to insert, manipulate, and animate graphics.
  • Attendees will learn custom animation features.
  • Attendees will learn about using Templates and how to create new ones.
  • Attendees will know how to Import and Export to and from other programs (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word, Access etc.).
  • Attendees will understand the basics of developing an effective presentation.
  • Attendees will learn how to enhance presentations using sounds, hypertext links, action buttons, pointer options, handouts and more.

PubMed/My NCBI: Introduction

Level: All except very experienced searchers
Duration: 60 minutes
Audience: All UMMS and UMMHC
Abstract: This 60-minute class will introduce the basics of searching the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE database using the PubMed interface.
Objectives:
  • Attendees will know how to access PubMed and be familiar with its content.
  • Attendees will be able to conduct basic PubMed searches, limit and combine their results, save them to the Clipboard, and find Related Articles.
  • Attendees will understand how to use the Journals and MeSH databases, search by citation, and find Clinical Queries.
  • Attendees will learn how to set filters and save searches using My NCBI.

RefWorks: Introduction to the online bibliographic software program

Level: Intermediate - participants should be familiar with finding research articles in MEDLINE. Experience with other databases is desirable.
Duration: 45 minutes
Audience: All UMMS and UMMHC
Abstract: This class will introduce building a bibliography using the RefWorks bibliographic citation management program.
Objectives:
  • Attendees will set up a RefWorks bibliographic database of references.
  • Attendees will learn how to manually add references into their RefWorks bibliography.
  • Attendees will learn how to import references directly into their RefWorks bibliography from Ovid and/or EBSCO.
  • Attendees will learn how to save articles in PubMed in MEDLINE format, send them to text and then import them into their RefWorks bibliography.
  • Attendees will learn how to set up folders, search, edit and format references in their RefWorks bibliography.
  • Attendees will be able to build bibliographies from RefWorks.
  • Attendees will learn how to add citations from RefWorks into papers, both using Write-N-Cite and One Line / One Cite View.
  • Attendees will be able to format their paper and bibliography.
  • Attendees will be able to change the format of the citations and bibliographies in their papers.
  • Attendees will know how to access their RefWorks account remotely.

Web of Science: Science Citation Index & Journal Citation Reports

Level: All
Duration: 60 minutes
Audience: All UMMS and UMMHC
Abstract: This 1-hour class will introduce users to Science Citation Index and also to Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and ISI HighlyCited.com. All three are part of ISI's Web of Science.
Objectives:
  • Attendees will know how to search in Science Citation Index.
  • Attendees will be able to analyze results of their searches and find citation information.
  • Attendees will know how to print, save, or email selected records.
  • Attendees will be familiar with the JCR and be able to use it to find out citation rankings of journals.
  • Attendees will be familiar with the ISI HighlyCited database.
  • Attendees will be able to complete searches in all three ISI databases.
