In 1993, a study demonstrated that giving an HIV+ woman AZT during the second 20 weeks of pregnancy, and through the delivery, lowered the vertical transmission of the disease to the newborn. The vertical transmission rate in the placebo group was 25%, while in the treatment group, the rate was 8%.
